Chapter Eleven
I WAS HAPPY TO SAY that I won three hundred and fifty dollars at the slot machines when we went to talk to Sherman. Lucy, sadly, lost thirty dollars. I bought her lunch to cheer her up over the loss, and we spent a little time shopping at the nearby outlet mall before heading home.
The following morning, I decided that I needed to put that money in the bank. I didnât like having large amounts of cash on me, and three hundred and fifty dollars might not have been a lot to some, but I grew up in the South where we didnât always have a lot of extra money. We werenât poverty-stricken, but Mama made sure that we kids knew how to handle money. It also gave me an excuse to talk to Carol Johnson.
Carol had been married to Sherman Wright, and according to him, afterward she was married to Drew for six months. I wondered what she had to say about Drewâs death, and I also wondered why she had taken the job working with Suzie Bell and had seemingly tried to keep their marriage a secret from her.
I waited in a short line while Carol and another teller waited on customers. Thankfully, I got Carol as my teller. She smiled at me when I got to her window. âGood morning, Allie. How are you doing?â
I smiled. âIâm great. You wonât believe it, but my friend Lucy and I went to the casino yesterday, and I won three hundred and fifty dollars.â
Her eyes widened. âReally? Well, good for you! I never win anything when I go to the casino.â
âMe either. At least, normally I donât, but we decided to take a drive over there just to see how our luck was running. Unfortunately, Lucy last thirty dollars, so I guess her luck wasnât running so well.â I chuckled. âI was excited about winning the money. Heck, if I had won thirty dollars, I would have been thrilled.â
She laughed. âI know the feeling. What did you want to do today?â
âI think Iâm going to deposit this money. If I donât, Iâll blow it all in one shopping trip. I love the fall, and Iâve been itching to buy some nice things for the house, but my husband said I already have lots of nice things for the house.â
She laughed again. âI know what you mean. Husbands are just that way, arenât they?â
I nodded. âWhat does your husband say when you bring shopping bags into the house?â It suddenly occurred to me that I didnât know if Carol was married or not. Her last name was Johnson, so I knew she wasnât using the last name of either of her first two husbands, and I wondered if she had married again.
âOh, my husband doesnât say a thing because I donât have a husband. I can shop to my heartâs desire.â She laughed heartily at this.
I laughed along with her. âWell, I guess you donât have any problems then, do
